10,000 first printing.. A collection of beautiful reproductions of some of the world's greatest masterpieces that have their home within the nation's art collection highlights many recent acquisitions and includes a curator's fascinating commentaryI purchased the earlier book by John Walker very inexpensively (used) and was disappointed to recieve it musty and in bad condition. It is a very large collection of photos of the paintings in the gallery. The latter's huge contribution is a testament that there was plenty of money to be made from nickel and dime stores! Although there are examples from more recent times, the collection is certainly weighted towards old masters. A lot of the works are featured on a full page and the quality of the reproductions are excellent; a significant improvement on the publication values of the previous edition written by John Walker. We purchased this book as a reminder of our recent trip to the National Gallery of Art. I have not spent a lot of time reading through it yet, but I am very happy with the book.. Very highly recommended.. Nevertheless I found the book enjoyable enough to throw that one away and try again with this edition at a much greater price. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is that many of the illustrations are half page in size even though the entire page is devoted to them - to waste so much space instead of making the illustrations larger is sinful.. It was worth every penny spent on both. As art gallery overviews this publication certainly ranksWith its richly hued and finely detailed full-page reproductions and engaging text, this superb survey of the nation's art treasures makes the National Gallery accessible to everyone.
