Kohn also takes issue with the backlash against the whole-language approach to reading instruction (though this argument wears thin, given that many schools have already moved beyond the debate to use a combination of whole language and phonics). An established critic of America's fixation on grades and test scores, Kohn has written a detailed, methodical treatise that accuses politicians and educators of replacing John Dewey, the father of public education, with test-tutoring king Stanley Kaplan. The overall message of The Schools Our Children Deserve is a valid cautionary tale about the future of American education that deserves to be heard out by teachers, policymakers, and parents. Teacher-turned-writer Alfie Kohn takes on traditional-education giants like E.D. Hirsch, along with practically every state government "raising the bar" and toughening standards, in this attack on the back-to-basics movement. Berliner and Bruce J. He joins David C. Kohn backs up his argument with research and observations from like-minded reformers such as Deborah Meier, but his position is nothing new. --Jodi Mailander FarrellI am almost done with the book and I found it much easier to grok than the Agile Rails book. I'm sorry Mr Burns, but I don't care what your personal feelings are about Curtis I wanted to read about Curtis' life what he went through, how he came to write such beautiful music - but instead you give track by track detail of every album - and thats it. I wept, laughed, and cheered for Bud as he exhibited so many of the same qualities as our newest family member. There is a lot of great information in this book. And what highlights! There are so many iconic works that to enumerate them would take many paragraphs. However, the book is not deep. I read it in two days and it definitely gave me the "Reacher fix" I wanted. It starts in the usual way with Reacher turning up in a small town and immediately running into a woman in need of assistance (in this case Michelle Chang, a former FBI agent turned private investigator who is looking for her missing colleague), but it turns into a cross-country investigation that touches on issues that are current and very nasty. And that is one of the issues that I had with the book: it's dark. Lisa is smart, pretty, popular and going insane. LiHere at last is a book that challenges the two dominant forces in American education: an aggressive nostalgia for traditional teaching (“If it was bad enough for me, it’s bad enough for my kids”) and a heavy-handed push for Tougher Standards.. In this “lively, provocative and well-researched book” (Theodore Sizer), AlTe Kohn builds a powerful argument against the “back to basics” philosophy of teaching and simplistic demands to “raise the bar.” Drawing on stories from real classrooms and extensive research, Kohn shows parents, educators, and others interested in the debate how schools can help students explore ideas rather than filling them with forgettable facts and preparing them for standardized tests
